The first test in Dunedin lived up to its billing, with New Zealand securing a 31–27 win over an experimental but energetic French side. The result kept the All Blacks locked in at No. 2 in the World Rugby Rankings, behind only South Africa.
New Zealand, under new head coach Scott Robertson, leaned on a veteran core to control the match, including standout performances from Ardie Savea, Richie Mo’unga, and Beauden Barrett. Robertson’s experienced squad executed the fundamentals and managed the game well in the final quarter to hold off a late French rally.
Despite the loss, Fabien Galthié’s squad turned heads. With five uncapped players making their international debuts, France showed flashes of brilliance, particularly in broken play and at the breakdown. Their attacking tempo and resilience kept them within striking distance until the final whistle.
